WEEK 1: THE CREATIVE PROCESS – “ART, CRAFT & RESEARCH”

I’m back, enrolled in another MEDA subject.

Unfortunately I missed this week’s lecture, only just enrolling in the subject, however I spent quite a good amount of time going over the lecture content and reflecting on my creative practice from MEDA301.

Art, Craft & Research

Much like the beginning of 301, we began by discussing the relationship between ‘art’, ‘craft’ and ‘research’ in creative practice. I found myself looking back at the notes I had made about my practice as a Marketer from 301 and remembered struggling to link my practice to the words ‘art’ and ‘craft’.

I began to reflect on how ‘art’, ‘craft’ and ‘research’ inflect and help define one another.

Art – I think about art as being something extremely personal, based on individual interpretation. I also view art as being something that requires a certain degree of skill and view it as having a certain level of complexity

Craft – something developed and honed over time, under the influence/guidance/direction of a myriad of contributors

Research – rich in theory and based on understanding to influencing conceptual and materialistic elements

When I look at these definitions and look back to my MEDA301 project, I can see that the development of that project lacked research. I feel like it was rich in aesthetic, however, we could have researched the craft of collaging, and the work of Barbara Kruger and Natalie Nelson (whom we were inspired by) in much granular detail.

Placing Technology

Rather than looking at these terms at a micro level, Mat wanted us to view them from the perspective of ‘Technology’ and ‘Politics’ under the theme/motif of ‘Futures’ – wow, that’s a sentence!

Mat challenged us to view the future as multiple, which made me think of something my boyfriend’s dad says to me frequently – “Teagan, you make your own future”.

I believe that Technology lives at the heart of my practice as a marketer, and unlike many people, it excites and challenges me rather than scares me.

Technology gave my 301 group the ability to repurpose old sexist advertisements, with feminist messaging though digital collaging – we were able to manipulate the messaging and advertising. We used technology as a tool of expression, experimentation, connection and manipulation.

Looking to the Future (of this subject)

Although I’m not entirely sure how I want to approach the motif of futures in my craft for this subject, I am really excited to explore what my idea of the future as multiple may be.

Based on my work in a group in 301, I think I would like to work individually this semester and explore my own individual notion of the future – something personal.
